Earlier this year, Elisabeth McLaughlin (Lis) was presented with the Queen’s Scout Award which is the most prestigious award in scouting and is certainly more widely recognised than any other achievement award in any youth organisation throughout the world.

On the night more than 120 Venturers, Scouts, Rovers, Leaders, guests, family, friends and VIP’s joined together to witness and help celebrate Lis’s award. The night opened with an inspiring presentation by Tim Macartney-Snape OAM, AM the world renowned mountain climber and adventurer. Tim and Greg Mortimer were the first Australians to reach the summit of Mount Everest in 1984. In 1990, Tim became the first person ever to walk and climb from sea level to the top of Mount Everest.

The formal ceremony began with Lis being “piped” into the ceremony before all the presentations began. Words of congratulation were given by VIP’s Judy Hopwood MP the Member for Hornsby, Kerry Griffin the Sydney North Regional Commissioner Venturers and Leonie Cooke Assistant District Commissioner Benowie before Tas McManis and Greg Clarke presented Lis with her book and award. Ben Power, one of our Assistant Scout Leaders and the last person from Normo the gain the award then congratulated Lis and they gave us all a brief insight into what it takes and the motivations behind the achievement. Stuart McManis then “Charged” Lis to discharge her duties as a Queen’s Scout. It was very moving to hear Lis speak as she thanked everyone who had guided and assisted her to this point, especially Mum and Dad.

As the ceremony concluded Lis was once again piped put of the hall through an honour guard of Queen’s Scouts and Australian Scouts Medallion awardees (of which there were plenty in attendance).

Now for the fun!!  We then served up a sit down roast dinner to everyone (thanks Alda and Paul). We watched images of Lis in her time in scouting whilst enjoying a great meal and company before partying long into the night with a disco.

It is often said that you are not awarded the Queen’s Scout Award, rather you become one.  This is certainly so in Lis’s case. Lis has been a shining example to everyone that she comes into contact with and we know that Lis will take the experiences, skills and values that she has learnt in scouting with her on all her life’s adventures.

On behalf of the Normanhurst Scout Group we congratulate Lis and say “Good Scouting”.
